Recording Commentary

Record live audio commentary during a performance so registrants can hear your feedback.

Important: Recording commentary drains your battery quickly, especially over a full day of judging. Keep your device plugged in whenever possible. If you're a field judge and don't have access to a power outlet, bring a portable battery pack. A dead phone mid-performance means lost commentary.

Before You Begin

Starting a Recording

  1. Open the adjudication screen for the performance you're judging and tap the Commentary tab.
  2. Tap the large red microphone button labeled Press to record.
  3. You'll see a volume meter and a red "Recording" indicator confirming the recording is active. A timer shows the elapsed duration.

Keep the app open while recording - navigating away will interrupt the recording.

Pausing and Resuming

While recording, you'll see Pause and Stop buttons side by side.

  • Tap Pause to temporarily halt the recording. You'll be asked to confirm before the recording pauses.
  • While paused, the timer holds and you'll see a "Paused" label. Tap Resume (green button) to continue recording where you left off.

Pausing is useful if there's a break between segments or you need a moment before continuing your commentary.

Stopping and Saving

Tap Stop (the red square button) when you've finished your commentary. You'll be asked to confirm before the recording stops. Once confirmed, the recording is saved automatically and uploaded to the event host's system.

Tips for Great Commentary

  • Start with context - Mention the group name and what you're evaluating so the recording makes sense on its own.
  • Be specific - Reference particular moments, formations, or sections rather than giving only general feedback.
  • Keep a steady pace - Speak naturally but avoid long pauses. Registrants will listen to this at their own convenience.
  • Watch your environment - Background crowd noise is expected, but try to keep the mic close to reduce it.

Tip: If the recording doesn't start, check that Maestro has microphone permissions in your device settings. See Camera or Microphone Not Working for more help.
